What is the Budapest Card?

The Budapest Card is the official tourist card of the city of Budapest. It allows free use of public transportation and free admission to more than 30 museums and attractions. The Budapest Card also grants numerous discounts.

Unfortunately, some popular sights such as Buda Castle, Matthias Church (only with Budapest Card 72 Plus) or the Parliament building are not included.

The Budapest Card allows free use of all BKK public transportation in Budapest, even the mountain bus to Buda Castle and the chairlift to Normafa. The following means of transportation are included:

  • Subway
  • Streetcar

  • Trolleybuses
  • Suburban trains (HÉV)
  • Trains
  • Zugliget chairlift
  • Buda Castle Bus

The card is activated the first time it is used and is then valid for 24, 48, 72, 96 or 120 hours, whereby you only have to show the card on each means of transport.

A free airport transfer is only included in the Budapest Card 72h Plus, but you will receive a discount for the miniBUD airport transfer.

How to use the Budapest Card optimally

Activate the card in the morning to make the most of the full 24 to 120 hours. Validity begins with the first use.

Visit as many of the 20+ free museums as possible, such as the Hungarian National Gallery, the National Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts. These museums have individual entrance fees of 10,00 - 15,00 EUR.

Take advantage of unlimited free travel on the subway, streetcars, buses and S-Bahn. You can easily take the castle bus to Buda Castle.

The price of the Budapest Card depends on the period of validity:

  • 24 hours: 39,00 EUR
  • 48 hours: 49,00 EUR
  • 72 hours: 64,00 EUR
  • 96 hours: 77,00 EUR
  • 120 hours: 92,00 EUR

Unfortunately, there is no separate Budapest Card for children and young people. However, it is generally not worth paying the full price, as children have reduced or free admission to many attractions.

The card can be purchased online as a voucher that can be exchanged for a plastic card.
